The Legacy of Trinity House

If you stroll up Bedford Place, past the cafés and small independent shops, you’ll eventually come across a quietly dignified yellow‑brick building that seems to watch the street with calm, steady eyes. This is Trinity House—a modest but charming survivor from Southampton’s early 19th‑century growth.

Built sometime before 1840, the house belongs to the era when Bedford Place was transforming from open land into a fashionable new suburb. Its original builder, John Snook, was one of the key craftsmen shaping the neighbourhood. In fact, he liked the house enough to live in it himself for a time, which feels like a small but telling vote of confidence in his own handiwork.

The building’s look is classic Regency Southampton:
• soft yellow brick,
• a hipped slate roof with generous eaves,
• and a welcoming Doric portico framing the front door.

In 1882, the house passed into the hands of Major‑General William Robert Farmar, a veteran of the Crimean War and the Indian Uprising. His arrival marked a shift in the building’s social standing—from a builder’s residence to the home of a distinguished military man. Over time, as Bedford Place evolved into a lively commercial street, the house adapted too, eventually becoming business premises.

Though today it’s known as Trinity House, older residents might remember it as Bedford House, a name tied to the Dukes of Bedford who once owned the surrounding land. Whatever the name, the building has always been part of the area’s fabric.

Now home to thriving independent businesses, Trinity House continues to do what it has always done best: sit gracefully at the heart of a changing neighbourhood, offering a touch of historic charm amid the bustle of modern Southampton.
